Conviction of the Spirit

The Spirit convicts the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment and awakens sinners to their need for Christ.

Formal Definition

Conviction of the Spirit is the work by which the Holy Spirit exposes sin, reveals truth, and presses the claims of God upon the human heart.

Key Scriptures

John 16:8–11
Acts 2:37
1 Corinthians 14:24–25

Explanation

Conviction is more than guilt feelings. It is God’s searching light exposing falsehood and drawing the sinner into honest reckoning with reality. Without the Spirit’s convicting work, hearts remain resistant and self-justifying.
