Law and Grace
Law and grace are not enemies in Scripture, but must be understood according to their covenantal and redemptive roles.
Formal Definition
Law and grace describes the theological relationship between God’s holy commands and His gracious saving action in the unfolding covenant story.
Key Scriptures
Exodus 20
John 1:17
Romans 3:31
Galatians 3:19–25
John 1:17
Romans 3:31
Galatians 3:19–25
Explanation
God’s law reveals His character and exposes sin, while grace saves, renews, and empowers obedience. Problems arise when law is used as a ladder for self-righteousness or when grace is twisted into license. The gospel upholds holiness while grounding acceptance in Christ.
