Temptation

Temptation is the enticement toward sin arising through the world, the flesh, and the devil.

Formal Definition

Temptation is the solicitation to disobey God through inward desire, external pressure, or spiritual opposition.

Key Scriptures

Matthew 4:1–11
1 Corinthians 10:13
James 1:13–15
1 John 2:15–17

Explanation

Temptation is not itself sin, but it is a real battleground. Scripture teaches believers to watch, pray, resist the devil, and flee occasions of sin. Christ’s victory in temptation also assures us that He understands our weakness without sharing in our sin.
