Inspiration

Inspiration describes the Spirit-guided process by which Scripture is given by God through human authors.

Formal Definition

Inspiration is the divine work whereby God superintended human authors so that the words of Scripture are truly their words and fully His word.

Key Scriptures

2 Timothy 3:16–17
2 Peter 1:20–21
Matthew 5:17–18

Explanation

The doctrine of inspiration protects both divine authorship and real human authorship. The Bible does not present itself as a merely human reflection on religious experience; it is breathed out by God. Yet the personality, vocabulary, and historical setting of each author remain present.

Because Scripture is inspired, it is uniquely authoritative for doctrine, correction, formation, and faithful teaching.

The church has long confessed that Scripture is inspired, even while discussing how inspiration relates to genre, style, and textual transmission.

Viewpoints / Debates

Discussions often include verbal plenary inspiration, dynamic theories of inspiration, and questions about how inspiration relates to inerrancy.
