Intermediate State

The intermediate state refers to the condition of the dead between bodily death and final resurrection.

Formal Definition

The intermediate state is the conscious condition of human persons after death and before the final resurrection and judgment.

Key Scriptures

Luke 16:19–31
Luke 23:43
Philippians 1:21–23
Revelation 6:9–11

Explanation

Scripture points to a real postmortem condition prior to resurrection. Believers are with Christ, while final bodily consummation still awaits. The intermediate state is therefore important, but it is not the end of Christian hope, which remains fixed on resurrection.
